English Language Arts in the Montessori Classroom

Our comprehensive literacy model emphasizes six areas of focus for reading: vocabulary, phonological awareness, motivation and interest, phonics, fluency and comprehension. Each day, teachers read aloud to students from various genres exposing children to award winning children’s books, bestselling authors, classic literature and favorite stories.

Our comprehensive literacy model emphasizes seven areas of focus for writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, presentation. These are known as the 6+1 Writing Traits. Grammar  and spelling are taught under the traits of “conventions” and penmanship is covered under the trait of “presentation.”
